Cancer as most of us know is a killer disease and there is a place in Penang, Malaysia called Pure Lotus Hospice at 73, Jalan utama where victims seek refuge. One of my friends always praises the Christians for their charitable works and their hospitals, orphanages or old folks homes and laments the lack of Buddhist charitable organisations. Pure Lotus Hospice which was founded by Venerable Lyan Shih must be one of the few Buddhist charitable organisations around then. An eight year old boy who was left under the care of his grandmother and aunt by his Thai mother and Malaysian father spent his last moment there. He was sent to the Hospice when his cancer spread to the brain. The boy had his limb amputated and later the tumour in his brain grew big and pushed his left eyeball out off its socket. The boy was said to be calm when he was breathing his last breath. I guess that goes to say that there is a need for more charitable organisations to cater for the poor, the sick, and the dying irrespective of race and religion and which is what Pure Lotus Hospice is all about. The hospice can be contacted at 04-2295481.
