The Singing Buddhist Nun

Talking about the singing nun, probably you'd think about the 1966 Debbie Reynolds's movie about the Belgian Soeur Sourire (Sister Smile) aka Jeanine Decker who became internationally famous in 1963 with her hit song Dominique. But this is a Christian nun we are talking about and the idea does not seem strange since singing has always been part and parcel of the activities in churches. But what if it is a Buddhist nun we are talking about? Just the other day, I just happened to see one in TV. This half hour Variety Show from Taiwan, Qun Xing Hui had this Taiwanese nun in a black nun robe with a purple design singing and dancing her heart out! And boy! Was this nun a talented and flamboyant lady! Talking about herself and her thoughts animatedly, I couldn't help but notice her ring and bracelet even when she was not gesturing. I could understand the spectacles she had on but the ring and bracelet? No wonder, someone said she was unbecoming. The nun even brought her dog along and it surprised me that her dog just lied there docilely at her feet. I had thought she would be better off chanting and meditating in a temple but on second thoughts, she looked rather calm and at peace with herself and if she is happy spreading the good news in a way she knows how, then why not? All roads should lead to Rome!
