I read that Buddhism provided Dhamma or the impersonal law in place of God. The writer was of the opinion that this could not satisfy the craving of human beings and the religion of self-help had to be converted into a religion of promise and hope. When the Mahayana sect taught that Buddha’s watchful and compassionate eyes are on all miserable beings, a God was made out of Buddha and then when many Buddhists adopted the local god, Buddhism said to be a religion of No-God was transformed into the religion of Many-Gods. Perhaps, if you were to think of devas as Gods, the writer may then be right. But is it not the veru greed in man that has caused this change. Man is always seeking some kind of benefits and from a religion, it is better to have a God figure which like Santa Claus dishes out goodies like an eternal heaven, the washing away of sins and even a supply of beautiful virgins. The craving for all these freebies most probably reminds you too of the Four Noble Truth, that the path to eradicate craving which causes Man to suffer has not been trodden on...
