My God!

Somewhere I read, Buddha was silent about the existence or non-existence of God. The writer thought that since India was drowned in idol worship and anthropomorphism, a sudden step to monotheism would have been drastic and Buddha may have therefore chosen to remain silent.I thought it was drastic enough that Buddha started preaching about the Dhamma, first to the five ascetics at the Deer Park in Sarnath and then to the masses in so many places. But come to think about it again, when he was silent- did he mean there is only one god, no god or many gods or my god?
