Why Pray?

I suppose people don't just call out to God in times of trouble; they may call out to Jesus, Mohammed, Moses, the Goddess of Mercy, even Buddha or Guang Gong too, as long as people think they are a force that can help. There are people who believe in the power of prayers and people who believe that you will get what you want if you'd only ask God sincerely: James 4:2d-3 [2d] You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. Buddhists all over the world pray too and some ask for, besides blessings, unimaginable things from Buddha but have you ever wonder how all these fit in with the Buddhist concept of self-reliance? It is a known fact that Buddhism stresses the need for self-reliance and individual effort. Everyone has to work for his own salvation. It is not an external power or agent like God but his own actions that will determine his destiny. So, now why pray and ask for things?
