There are these five aggregates of existence that makes up an indiviual: form, sensation, perception, mental formations and consciousness known as the Five Skandhas or five heaps that the Buddha taught - said to be empty because they are qualities not possessed by an individual but will give rise to this idea of I or mine. I suppose then the skandhas act to give that false perception of us possessing something that we don't have. That, it is said, will bring much unhappiness especially when we cling to them. Have to chew on this yet...
