Mattress for Thought

Who would not want to sleep on a soft mattress filled with soft downy feathers? A monk most probably would love that too but then of course, he is not supposed to sleep on one, not even a bed especially if it is high. In Bentong, Pahang, once I heard a monk said that the rule came into existence during Buddha's time. A woman had run into a room and hid under the bed of a sleeping monk and subsequently the monk was accused of having an affair with the woman. The rule perhaps would avoid another similar unwanted incident but then, it could also seem unfair to other monks. Take heart though that a new, soft mattress just like an old lumpy one is not that good as a support for your back or neck. You would not opt to sleep on the cold, hard floor then, would you?
