Tara, Tara

Heard of Tara, probably first in Margaret Mitchell's novel, Gone with the Wind. Tara there, is the name of a plantation but there is yet another Tara,  the Buddhist Goddess of compassion. (inset).  At Tzu Chi's in Penang's rather new Paragon Shopping centre, I picked up a free copy of Tzu Chi's Buddhist in Action, a magazine which highlights some of the good things the foundation had done in places around the world. The foundation's healing hands had touched not only people in Buddhist countries but also people elsewhere like in Jordan and Indonesia. In the latter country for example, Tzu Chi's volunteers did not just helped clean up the heavily polluted Angke River in Jakarta, but they built liveable homes for the poor folks there too. While building the homes, they also built a school, a hospital and even a mosque for the people who were Muslims. The Cengkareng Great Love Village as the place is called, proved that human compassion knows no bound. But then again, human's compassion may vary. Not everyone practises compassion the same way. And not everyone practises compassion unconditionally. Just like there are different Taras,- Green Tara, Blue Tara, Red Tara, Black Tara, White Tara, and Yellow Tara. Tzu Chi Foundation is more like the White Tara.
