Yesterday was Mothers Day and someone sent a sutta, that's a buddhist scripture about mother. According to the Anguttara Nikaya, Buddha declared to the monks that there are two persons one can never repay ; one's mother and father. That is even if one is to carry them on the shoulder, give them riches and power and tend to them diligently in every whims and fancies. That applies to good parents, I suppose; who bring their children up, feed them well and guide them through this world since in the same sutta, Buddha declared too that if one encourages one's unbelieving, immoral, stingy and ignorant parents to be generous and wise, he would then not just repay them; but repays them more for what they have done. When I first read the sutta in its original form, I thought Buddha was being contradictory; but on second thoughts; our parents perhaps are or were not as perfect as we would like them to be. There should be room yet to repay them. Belated Happy Mothers Day!
