There are a few things about what Buddha was not that probably distance him from a lot of would be followers. First and foremost, Buddha was not God. So, he would not be handing out rewards or punishments on Judgement Day; that is, if there is one. Buddha was not even God reincarnate or the son of God and I suppose then he wasn't a saviour who could save others by washing away a person's sins with his blood or via any godly methods. He probably didn't hear voices whispering to him too; or come in contact with winged beings wearing halos on their heads for he was no prophet or messenger of God. He was just like anyone of us, a human and it's the norm to take humans for granted.
