Today is Malaysia day and it happen also to be the Buddhist Uposatha Observance Day ☸ 布萨.日, a day where lay Buddhists are encouraged to observe the Eight Precepts. This day is said to have been around since 600 BCE; since Buddha's time, that is and it was the Buddha himself who taught that the Uposatha day is for the cleansing of the defiled mind. Of course, observing the precepts should be on a daily basis; only that on this special day, both lay and ordained members of the sangha intensify their practice. Some sort of Mother's day, I think when you are specially reminded of the virtues of your mother. Happy Malaysia and Happy Uposatha day!
