An English Song

A Dhamma talk As I get older came about the same time I received a cover version of Alan Jackson's The Older I Get. I suppose most if not all religions have their takes on old age. It goes that King Pasenadi of Kosala asked the Buddha when they were in Savatthi Venerable sir, is anyone who is born free from aging and death? Sometimes such questions baffle us; most probably all of us know that aging and death is inevitable as when Buddha replied Great king, no one who is born is free from aging and death. Then, during Buddha's time; most certainly a large part of the world is still unknown and some people then may wonder if there  are other beings living elsewhere who are immortals; and then of course, when we are young and healthy, we hardly think about sickness and death. Some people may even go to the extend of doing whatever they like regardless of whether they are right or wrong, thinking that they could repent and make amends later; something entirely different from what Buddha prescribed. When King Pasenadi said As aging and death are rolling in on me, venerable sir, what else should I do but live by the Dhamma, live righteously, and do wholesome and meritorious deeds?, Buddha had in turn replied, So it is, great king! So it is, great king! As aging and death are rolling in on you, what else should you do but live by the Dhamma, live righteously, and do wholesome and meritorious deeds?

Now, let's just listen to The Older I Get and see we could pick some gems of wisdom....
