Donkey Tale

Someone sent a story of a donkey:  A demon released the donkey which was tied to a tree. This donkey then entered a field of a farmer and ate everything there. The farmer’s wife, afraid that the donkey would destroy the farm, took a rifle and killed it. This angered the donkey’s owner who then took his rifle and fired at the woman. When the farmer came home and found his wife dead, he in turn killed the donkey's owner. Now, the donkey owner had sons who upon his death, burned the farmer's field in retaliation, only to be all killed  later by the farmer. When asked what the demon had done, he merely said: I did nothing, I just released the donkey.  Now, this really got  me wondering about karma, the principle of cause and effect where the intent and actions of an individual influence the future of that individual. Intent should play a role in karma. When is karma in action here in this story of the donkey? Is there a case where karma does not play a role. Food for thought!
