Erotic Yab-yum

Hindu temples are fascinating. Some like the Khajuraho Temples in Madhya Pradesh and Markandeshwar Temple in Maharashtrahave are mind boggling as they have elaborate explicit erotic sculptures depicting various sexual positions. It has been explained that sex education is a taboo in ancient time and the erotic sculptures on the temples served to educate. Erotic sculptures don't appear in Buddhist temples I suppose; but there's always the Yab-yum in Buddhist art. Yab-yum; father-mother in the Tibetan language depicts a male deity in sexual embrace with his female consort; supposedly to represent the primordial union of wisdom and compassion. The male represent compassion and female, wisdom; both of which are required to achieve enlightenment. Yab-yum, by the way is peculiar to India and countries near it such as Bhutan, Nepal, and Tibet. In China and Japan, it was never fully accepted.
