News! : Prayers in a School
Chinese New Year, day 13; and I chanced upon an old piece of news, Penang school gets stern warning after Christian prayer recital. Then, I was wondering if a Christian prayer would be different from say, a Buddhist prayer. Then, I had asked a Buddhist friend how he prays in a temple, remembering that mother just asked the kids to clasp the hands to pay respect to Buddha or maybe, just offer some josssticks. My friend said he pays obeisance, express great respect to Buddha that is; by bowing thrice and reciting three times Namo Tassa Bhagavato Arahato Samma Sambuddhassa and take refuge in the Triple Gem, the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha by reciting Buddham Saranam Gacchami Dhammam Saranam Gacchami Sangham Saranam Gacchami Dutiyampi Buddham Saranam Gacchami Dutiyampi Dhammam Saranam Gacchami Dutiyampi Sangham Saranam Gacchami. Following this, any suitable sutta will be recited. Suttas are Buddhist discourses and there are more than 10,000 of them. I haven't seen a Buddhist prayer being recited in a school assembly or any school function but probably there is a suitable one just for that.
