Confusing Rebirth

Rebirth, expounded in Buddhism fascinates but never fails to confuse. Once, I asked a friend about the planes of existence; like how many there are and what are they and couldn't get more confused than ever. There are supposed to be 31 planes in all; and these are under 3 main groups; The Immaterial World (arupa-loka), The Fine-Material World (rupa-loka) and The Sensuous World (kama-loka). Then, I read that rebirths occur in six realms of existence. From another point of view, I suppose the 31 planes could be grouped into 6, three  being good realms where the heavenly, demi-god or humans dwell;  and three being bad realms which  involved animals, ghosts and hells.
