Chah Subhaddo better known as Ajahn Chah was an influential Thai Buddhist monk instrumental in establishing Theraveda Buddhism in the West. Among his disciples were Westerners who became notable monks in the West. Ajahn Chah was much respected and loved in his own country, Thailand. When he passed away in 1992, his  funeral could not be held immediately as hundreds of thousands of people were expected to attend. When it was held a year later, more than one million people came to pay respect, including the Thai royal family.
