Yungang Grotto is the oldest of the three largest grottos in China. Located on the southern cliffs of Wuzhou Mountain, 16 kilometres west of Datong, Shanxi Province, it is hewn out of a cliff side by the ethnic groups of the Northern Wei Dynasty. Stretching approximately one kilometer from east to west, the grottoes look like a honeycomb and boast of 1000 grottoes and some 50000 Buddhist statues.
