The Noble Eightfold Path

The Noble Eightfold Path usually represented by the Dharma wheel, is the teaching of the Buddha that is prescribed to end dukkha, or suffering. It is essentially a practical guide of bringing about ethical and meditative discipline, and forms the Four Noble Truths.

There are eight elements in the Noble Eightfold Path, and these are divided into three basic categories:

  • Wisdom (Sanskrit: prajñā, Pāli: paññā)
1. Right view
2. Right intention
  • Ethical conduct (Sanskrit: śīla, Pāli: sīla)
3. Right speech
4. Right action
5. Right livelihood
  • Mental discipline (Sanskrit and Pāli: samādhi)
6. Right effort
7. Right mindfulness

These eight elements are to be developed more or less simultaneously according to the capacity of each individual and they are all linked together and each helps the cultivation of the others.

Thank you for remembering me these parts of the path. The basic thoughts are very important and I begin to forget about them with time that pass after I studied them.

Part of why I have this blog is to remind myself too. We are human and we forget.
