Liudmila's post Is Khambo Lama Itighelov alive? at her Lazy Yogi blog boggles the mind. The Lama presently sits in a lotus position in a box in a temple. In 1927, the Lama had entered a state of meditation after reciting a mantra for a dead person. Thirty years later, the box was opened and his body was found to have not putrefy and the box was thus resealed only to be reopened again in 2002 under the watchful eyes of many scientists. The scientists said the Lama is still alive. His skin and joints are flexible and the protein level is that of a live body, just as the the hairs, nails and muscles. If I am not mistaken, similar cases involving Buddhist monks occur in Thailand and Japan too. Liudmila argued that animals could hibernate for a long period of time and it is only logical that human beings could do it too. My question now is why would anyone wants to sit and be passive when he or she could give so much to the world? Now, Khambo Lama itighelov is definitely not a bodhisattva ( 菩萨 púsà or phothisat, โพธิสัตว์), an enlightenment-being who will compassionately refrain from entering nirvana in order to save others. The fact that he recited a dead man mantra for himself shows that he is not returning to this mundane world. Could he then be an anagami or a non returner?
