Quotes to Ponder: Socrates

False words are not only evil in themselves, but they infect the soul with evil.

  • Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings, so that you shall gain easily what others have labored hard for.

  • I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing.

  • I know nothing except the fact of my ignorance.

  • From the deepest desires often come the deadliest hate.

  • Beware the barrenness of a busy life.

Socrates ( 469 BC–399 BC) was a Greek philosopher credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy.

"The barrenness of a busy life." Yes, Socrates said that many people are so busy bouncing the ball, but don't know why they're bouncing it! As in Buddhism, Zen masters point out the silliness of "rushing to our own deaths."
