Confucius, the Buddha

A trailer on Confucius , Chow Yuen Fatt's latest movie was in TV this morning. Somewhere I have read about the famed Chinese philosopher brushing off his students when asked a question about Heaven and Hell. Confucius had said, If one could not yet solve the problems on Earth, why bother thinking about Heaven and Hell? Somewhere else, I have read about Buddha being silent when asked about the existence of God. When pressed for an answer, he had said that if you are suffering from a stomach ache, you would consider concentrating on relieving the pain. Confucius sounds so much like Buddha and could he not be a Buddha if you think that every sentient being has the capability of achieving enlightenment and becoming a Buddha himself? Does one have to wait for Sakyamuni Buddha or any other Buddha to appear before being able to walk down the path to enligtenment? Confucius has me rather confused!

I like qutations of great philosophers. And agree with him this time too. But normally the persons know about only one-two episodes from their lives. Sad.
