The Borneo Post reported that a boy in a missionary school in Kuching, East Malaysia was caned 10 times on the palm by a senior assistant for bringing food to school. Her mother had packed him fried rice with non-halal sausages. Non-halal sausages are sausages with pork content and these are forbidden for Muslims. I suppose it is not just the Muslims who are sensitive over what they eat. I still remember a Hindu lady teacher who became very angry after she unwittingly chomped on a curry puff containing beef offered to the staff by a colleague. Some Buddhists especially those said to be devotees of Guan Yin or Goddess of Mercy do not take beef too. While the Hindus do not take beef on compassionate ground, I am not too sure why the Guan Yin devotees do not take beef . I suppose it is the way of the world to abstain from certain food without really knowing the reason. That'd probably make you angry - the blind faith, I mean - not the food...
