Once, I read about an Egyptian soldier, Aurelius Polion, who lived during the period when the Romans ruled. His letter which was written in Greek, purportedly was found outside a temple in the Egyptian town of Tebtunis by an archaeological expedition led by Bernard Grenfell and Arthur Hunt. In his letter to his mother, he said, I pray that you are in good health night and day, and I always make obeisance before all the gods on your behalf. I supposed in Buddhism, God is not placed so high up in a pedestal. Buddhists do not pray to God but they do offer respect to Buddha. In many cases too, I suppose they ask for favours. Who doesn't?
