Fake News

Long before Elvis, the King of Rock and Roll passed away, I remember there was news of his purported demise; fake news of course. Now, it's famed Taiwanese singer Fei Yu Ching's turn when the latter was just in his final leg of his farewell tour which would end in October. My other niece had whatsApped to ask if the news she heard was true and someone else had posted in Facebook that a video describing the singer's funeral which was uploaded in YouTube was fake. In the age where internet reigns, news whether true or fake; reach people at the press of a button and spread even faster. With modern technologies, photos and videos can be edited to make the news convincing. In the case of fake news, in the past it was created to cause a sensation to sell newspapers. If however if one is to consider the pain and anquish such news may cause, one would perhaps wonder if all these are worth it. Then of course, one would like to think that it's tantamount to breaking the fourth of the Buddhist Five Percepts: Musavada veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami I undertake the precept to refrain from incorrect speech.
