A mufti is an Islamic jurist. A mufti is qualified to issue a fatwa, a nonbinding opinion on a point of Islamic law. I suppose a monk is far from being a mufti; I don't even know if there's such thing as Buddhist law; but there's this mufti who just called for Chinese and Tamil schools in Malaysia to be closed down. I remember the same mufti wrote a poem on cow worshippers with contents like these: When those who worship cows unite, and call for our preacher to be troubled, to be given to a cruel government that prays to fire, the burner of widows in another continent, which teaches people to make castes, to the unfortunate point of being called pariahs... Well, I haven't seen a monk who behaves thus; but if there is one; is this ground for being disrobed?
