Poon choi was served for dinner on the first day of Chinese New Year. A Cantonese dish consisting of many layers of different ingredients in a large container called poon; I had thought it would only be right and fun if a group of people dig into the dish. Then, Tuesday, February 1; the first day of Chinese New Year 2022 also marks the new moon of the traditional Buddhist calendar. So, it's an observance day for Buddhists; Uposatha Day, where lay Buddhists put an extra effort to practise the Eight Precepts. The sixth precept I undertake to observe the rule of abstinence from taking food at the wrong time; then meant not everyone at home would take dinner, thereby reducing the number of people digging into the poon choi; and I figure decreasing the fun too.
