It's Vesak eve! Vesak 2022 falls on Sunday, 15 May. While the Omicron variant of the Covid 19 virus is still wreaking havoc the world over, lockdown is out for most countries. In the national front, the country had announced going into a transition phase to endemic and the people had been advised to learn to live with the Covid-19 virus in the best way possible, keeping in mind to protect oneself according to proper SOPs and existing laws. The recent long school and Hari Raya holidays saw an exodus of people from the city to their hometown and it looked like there was a spike of infected cases afterwards; the figure went over 3000 as of May 12. Come Vesak Sunday, 15 May; probably temples would be thronged with Buddhist devotees; another spike later perhaps; unless people are careful about sanitising oneself, wearing masks etc. It's a good time to reflect on the Buddha, that he was a human, a great teacher. Taking refuge in the Buddha; somewhere I read, is because Buddha provides an example of how to live, be free of suffering and achieve enlightenment. Protecting oneself from Covid-19 has never been in the equation.
Happy Vesak, everyone!
