Often in Buddhism, one hears of right speech which includes abstaining from lying, divisive speech, abusive speech, and idle chatter. While many times we don't lie or abuse or speak with the intention to divide , many times too I suppose; we indulge in idle chatter. Idle chatter seems pretty harmless, fun even especially if you are idling away talking about your favourite movie stars or singers.
