A friend from Britain came back for Chinese New Year and stayed on for Cheng Beng. My friends and I remember what a good and kind host he was when we visited him years back and went on to treat him to dinner. There was a sizzling dish of cuttlefish, fish meat, peppers and brinjals which gave out an awful lot of smoke but the one dish that made me wonder was the meat dish cooked with Guiness Stout. While Buddhists aren't encouraged to kill, eating meat isn't really condoned especially when the person eating isn't doing the killing himself or ordering someone else to do the killing for him. Buddhists aren't encouraged to drink too lest they get intoxicated and break the precepts. Is food cooked with hard drinks acceptable? Some traditional Chinese recipes do require wine as one of the ingredients.
