News ! : Artificial Flowers for Wesak
It's Wesak morn and I wake up to a headline in an e-newspaper : Devotees turn to artificial flowers to cut costs. It seems that in Penang, some Buddhist would be offering artificial flowers during Wesak Day. While this has been attributed to a low supply of flowers and an effort to cut down expenses, the fact that florists reported a drop in sales for real blooms seems to suggest that there are more than enough fresh flowers to go around. While devotees were said to prefer artificial flowers as they were cheaper and could be re-used, one probably couldn't imagine offering the flowers this Wesak and keeping them to be offered next Wesak. Then of course, flowers offered to the Buddha wouldn't be a symbol of impermanence.
Happy Wesak, everyone!
